Brisbane Storage – What are the Options ?

Posted by admin on Aug-4-2008

Brisbane has always offered a variety of different types of storage facilities, and there are a number of different options available for residents and business owners in and around Brisbane (including surrounding areas such as the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and westwards out through Ipswich and beyond).

Like the rest of Australia, general storage facilities are traditionally based around the two main areas – Self Storage and Public Storage – along with a variety of specialist storage services such as Boat Storage, Car Storage, Caravan Storage and even Wine Storage.Below is an outline of some of the different types of Storage services available in Brisbane :

  • Public Storage : is one of the oldest options for storage. It involves you taking your stuff (usually already packed up in boxes/crates) to a warehouse of some sort. You hand it all over, and they take it off and store it somewhere in the warehouse. When you want it back, you let them know, they go find it, and bring it to your ready for you to pick up. With Public Storage you wouldn’t normally be able to access your stored items until the end of the storage period.
  • Self Storage : With Self Storage (also known – particularly in the US, as mini storage), you get to store your items in a unit, or space – which you have access to pretty much whenever you want – sometimes 24×7. You rent out the space, and can add, remove or access items as nececassry throughout the storage period.
  • Boat Storage : is often (but not always) associated with Marinas or Boat Clubs. Boat owners, struggling to find space to store their boats at their own home – or not wanting to tow their boats long distances to launch them – can sometimes find storage facilities nearer to the boat ramp, where they can store their boats when not in use.
  • Car Storage : Offers a variety of options depending on speciofic needs. Car Storage may be short term, but is often long term – if for example you are going abroad for an extended period and want to keep your vehicle safe while you are away.
  • Caravan Storage : Similar to boat storage in some ways – caravan owners may have difficulty storing their vans at their own premises, and need an alternate location where they can stire their caravan when not in use.
  • Business Storage : There are many reasons why a business might like some extra storage space. This could be used for extra storage of files or documents, offsite storage of data backups, or even additional storage for stock to cater for seasonal changes in stock levels.
  • Car Parks : A relatively new service that has become available over the last few years is Car Park Rental. This could be considered as part time storage for your car, and is most useful for people who work or study in an area where parking is difficult or expensive. Car Parks can often be rented on a daily basis and may be available for 24×7 access or only certain hours of the day.

There is also a new option which seems might soon be available in Brisbane called Public Storage. We don’t yet know an awful lot about this, but it is being billed as “a revolution in self storage” and seems to offer a different approach altogether to traditional storage options. We will do a bit more digging on this … and provide more information about Private Storage once it becomes available.
