Here’s hoping engineers have a sense of humour!
Engineering students challenge Big Esky’s hold on the Cambodian market
BRISBANE — The development of a controversial vaccine storage system for Cambodian villages has been met with intense criticism from Big Esky lobbyists.
The Esky, Ice Pack and Chilly Bin consortium have labelled the system “radical” and “unnecessary”, insisting that the introduction of a new vaccine storage method will force the closure of many esky factories throughout Asia.
The vaccine storage unit (VSU) will allow vaccines to be safely stored and transported to remote parts of Cambodia, rendering the traditional esky and ice pack storage method redundant.
The system, designed by four engineering students from the University of Queensland, involves mounting a commercial fridge unit inside an off road vehicle capable of negotiating rough terrain.
The unit will be powered by a specially modified energy source capable of providing long term storage capability, such as inbuilt solar panels or vehicle battery.
However ice pack and esky groups remain unconvinced of the new VSU’s merits.
According to Big Esky spokesperson Imogen Blank, the engineers responsible for the design have not considered the effect the VSU will have on the Asian esky trade.
“Vaccine storage and distribution make up 90% of all esky sales in Cambodia,” she said.
“This VSU is great for the engineers who will all be highly paid one day but what about the workers at the esky factories? Who is going to tell them they won’t have a job anymore? What about the effect on esky share prices? How on earth will our CEO’s afford penthouses, Aston Martin’s and Armani suits if the new VSU is implemented?”
Despite the concerns of the Big Esky conglomerate, members of the Resource Development International Cambodia group (RDIC) are insisting that healthcare workers adopt the new VSU system as soon as it becomes operational.
“We waste so much time filling and refilling ice trays in order to make the eskies cold,” RDIC director Martine Reed said.
“This new VSU will greatly help the health and wellbeing of people in rural Cambodia.”
However Big Esky officials are adamant that ambitious engineers will cause economic devastation for Cambodia and the esky trade in general.
According to senior engineer James Montgomery III, Big Esky’s fears are “unfounded” and “devoid of any humanitarian interest.”
“Their argument is ridiculous. Eskies are completely inadequate for the safe storage of life saving vaccines, most of which need to be consistently stored somewhere between 2 to 8 degrees Celsius.”
“For too long Big Esky have been running smear campaigns designed to ridicule and insult the noble engineering profession. ”
“Enough is enough.”
